Elgar’s dramatic setting of Cardinal Newman’s poem concluded the Choir’s 125th anniversary celebrations. The work, regarded by many as Elgar’s finest, describes the death of a faithful man and the journey of his soul, guided by a guardian angel, to judgement, redemption and ultimate glory.
This concert was dedicated to the memory of James Eastham, who died suddenly on 13th April 2010. Dr Eastham, longtime conductor of Salford Choral Society and formerly of Blackburn Music Society, was well-known to many OCS members and usually attended our concerts.
